1.     Name of Department and Departmental contact

WEDC, Department of Civil and Building Engineering

J.D. Allen or M.D. Smith

2.     Programme Title and Award

MSc Water and Environmental Management (1144)

3.     Please tick any of the following which apply.  At least one box should be ticked.

The status of one or more modules will change from compulsory to optional

The status of one or more modules will change from optional to compulsory

The module choice available to students will be reduced

The semester(s) in which modules are taught will change

In one or more Parts of the programme, the proposal is to withdraw optional modules with a total weight

                 of 30 or more

Progression or degree qualification rules will change

The addition of distance learning/ partial DL provision

            First submission of Programme Specification

            Changes only to Programme Specification

            Any other changes

Do you consider these changes to be    Major     Minor

The above changes should be outlined in Section 5 below

4.     Reasons for the proposal: its purpose and relevance; how it will maintain or enhance the quality of teaching and learning; implications for existing programmes and modules

Reasons for this proposal.  In response to a change in student profile, the programme is being refocussed to meet current demands.  The proposal is for a more focussed programme, with some historic modules revised and/or combined.  Some new modules are also introduced.  Changes in student profiles mean that in recent years the number of students wishing to study some modules has been very low, and it has not been economic for staff to deliver these modules.

How it will maintain the quality of teaching and learning.  The changes produce a more focussed programme by delivering subjects closely linked to student aspirations, without compromising the level at which subjects are taught.  The proposed changes reflect staff perceptions of the topics that are most relevant to students wishing to study this programme.

Implications for existing programmes and modules.  The restructuring of the programme requires revision of some modules.  Some modules have been dropped, some have been revised or combined, and some new modules are introduced.  The changes will not require additional staff resources, as they can be managed using existing staff resources.  The programme is a one-year MSc programme, and current students will not be affected by the proposed changes.

5.     Outline of new/amended content: what elements are new, what is changing

The weighting for the Individual Research Project module changes from 45 to 60, in line with other departmental MSc programmes.

The titles and contents of some modules are revised, and some modules are combined.  Some new modules are also introduced.

The number of optional modules reduces, but the number of modules offered and taught is unlikely to change.  Several current modules are not taught because of lack of demand, effectively reducing the number of modules available to students.  The programme structure is much simplified, providing a clearer scheme of study.

Students will follow a much more focussed programme than in the recent past.

6.     If the revised Regulations apply to existing students, state the implications for students currently on placement/ leave of absence and resit students.

No significant effect is likely.  Very few students will be affected, and special dispensation will be sought for any individuals who are affected.

7.     Staffing implications - adequacy of existing departmental resources; net increase/reduction in staff teaching effort or demands on support staff

For long-term delivery, the staffing implications are negligible.  There will be some resource implications for combining modules and preparing fresh teaching materials, but these can be met using existing staff.

Overall, the implications are negligible.  Existing resources are adequate, and there are likely to be fewer demands on support staff, because there will be fewer optional modules to service.  The overall staff teaching effort should reduce because the increased weighting for the Individual Research Project reduces the number of taught modules.  Apart from this, teaching effort is likely to remain much the same, although for individuals there may be increases or reductions in teaching effort.  This programme has been, and will continue to be, delivered using only WEDC staff, with limited bought-in teaching.  No other departments are affected.

Consultation form not applicable.

8.     Financial implications - anticipated effect on departmental income and expenditure

These changes, and improved marketing of this focussed course, will attract additional students, thus increasing income.  The only expenditure is in staff time revising and amending modules.

9.     Additional Library requirements

Library consulted       Yes

                                    N/A

10.   Additional Computing Support required                                       Computing Services Consulted      Yes

            Network/Software (please elaborate):

             Lab space (please elaborate):                                                                                                       N/A

11.   Other resource implications, e.g. -; lecture room, lab and other space requirements; equipment, materials; timetabling constraints (block-teaching for example); any special residential requirements

None.  Teaching would be arranged using WEDC teaching rooms.

12.   Implications for other departments, both providing and receiving

No other departments are affected.
