7. Reasons for the proposal: its purpose and
relevance; how it will enhance calibre of teaching and learning; implications
for existing programmes and modules in the department This programme will complement and
interact with other MSc programmes in the department. It will satisfy a need for a high quality
professional development programme for
performance coaches that currently does not exist. It has been developed in consultation with
Sportscoach UK . |
8. Expected student numbers 10 - 15 |
9.
Staffing implications - adequacy of existing departmental resources;
net increase/reduction in staff teaching effort or demands on support staff It is envisaged that
staff will need to be bought in to teach on the Sport Science Support in
Coaching module and the Coaching Process module. The new post (Head of
Performance Coaching), jointly managed by SSES and SDC, will also contribute. Sport
Science Support in Coaching – A total of 40 hours of contact time +time for
preparation, directing and marking.
It is envisaged that the person/s teaching on this module will hold a
Phd and either be currently coaching at an elite level or have experience of
high performance coaching. Suitable
candidates may currently be working in the Sports Development Centre or other
institutions closely associated with the university (e.g English Institute of
Sport, Amateur Swimming Federation of Great Britain). Coaching Process – A total of 40 hours of contact time + time for preparation, directing and marking. It is envisaged that the person/s teaching on this module will hold a Phd and either be currently coaching at an elite level or have experience of high performance coaching. Suitable candidates may currently be working in the Sports Development Centre or other institutions closely associated with the university (e.g English Institute of Sport, Amateur Swimming Federation of Great Britain). |
10. Additional Library requirements Library
consultation has been carried out with Ruth Stubbings in the department and a
literature search completed. At present it is not envisaged that significant extra library texts/resources will be required beyond normal annual purchases |
11. Additional Computing Support required Network/Software (please elaborate): |
12. Other resource implications, e.g. - lecture
room, lab and other space requirements; equipment, materials; timetabling
constraints (block-teaching for example); any special residential
requirements A room will be needed for
lectures for one evening and one day on 3 occasions per 30 credit
module. |
There should be no implications for other departments as it is envisaged that all teaching will be done by either staff in the School or bought in – see above. |
John Stevens, Chief Executive of Sportscoach UK,
is very supportive of this new programme.
Meetings have been held with a number of personnel from Sportscoach UK
and a National Governing Body all of whom have expressed interest in this
programme and are supportive of an institution renowned in the world of sport
to offer such a programme. Support for this programme have also come from the Sports Development Centre. Existing students have also shown an interest. Also, see letter from Dr Robyn Jones, Bath University |
This programme will provide continuing
professional development for established performance coaches and a route to
progression for aspiring coaches. |
16. Any other relevant information There
would be opportunities for awards of a certificate or diploma if students did
not want to complete the full MSc programme.
For the award of a certificate students would require 60 credits from
two core modules (The Coaching Process and Sports Science Support in
Coaching). For the award of a diploma
students would require 120 credits from the Advanced Research Skills, the two
core modules, plus one other. |
