CSC99-P58

Curriculum Sub-Committee

Agenda

Subject: Distance Learning and Other Provision

Origin: Unconfirmed Minutes of Teaching and Learning Committee on 3 June 1999

It was noted that the PDQ Team had discussed this further item, which was also of direct relevance to Curriculum Sub-Committee, as a result of an enquiry from a department involved in programme development.

The PDQ Team took the view that distance learning and block taught versions of the same subject matter should normally be treated as separate modules, and it was essential if different types of assessment were being used. There was no reason why a single set of programme regulations could not provide for different modes of delivery within the programme, for example, listing distance learning and conventionally taught modules as different options, provided that the learning outcomes were intended to be the same.

It was suggested that distance learning conversions of existing modules should normally be cleared with the Chair of Curriculum Sub-Committee. DL conversions of entire programmes should normally go to the full committee.

The Chair of CSC indicated his wish to delegate responsibilities for approving DL module conversions to the AD(T)s. It was otherwise agreed to refer the above to Curriculum Sub-Committee as a basis for action.
