Subject: Report of the 87th Meeting
of the Human Resources Committee - Items for Approval

Council is asked to approve the following
matters dealt with by the Committee at its 87th meeting on 11
November 2004 as follows:
1. Extensions to Fixed-Term Contracts
The
Committee recommends this procedure for approval (paper attached).
2. Promotion to Senior Lecturer by the
Research Route
The
Committee recommends for approval, initially for 2005 only, amendments to the
Engineering Faculty criteria for promotion to Senior Lecturer by the Research
Route (papers attached). A
recommendation regarding amendments to be introduced in 2008 and 2010 would be
made following the outcome of a similar review being undertaken by the
Faculties of Science and Social Sciences and Humanities.
3. Procedure for the Award of Personal Titles
The
Committee recommends for approval revisions to the procedures for the award of
Personal Titles.
4. Criteria
for Recruitment of, or Redesignation to, Research Fellows
The Committee recommends for approval
criteria amended as the result of comments received following a previous Senate
meeting.
The Committee recommends for approval a
new Policy on Child Protection.
6. Academic Probation
The Committee recommend for
approval an amendment to the procedures for Academic Staff probation - that all
new academic staff should be required normally to make at least one external

the Human Resources Committee at its meeting held on 11 November 2004:
Academic and Related Staff Probation
The Committee noted action taken by the
Vice-Chancellor in confirming the appointments of 13 members of academic staff
and 16 academic–related members of staff.
Reward Review:
Promotions and Merit Awards
The following promotions, effective from 1 August
2004, were reported to the Committee:

The Committee agreed that, in 2005, submissions for merit
awards would be considered at meetings of the Faculty Directorates and the
Non-Faculty Staff Sub-Group in February.
Promotions to Senior Lecturer would be considered by Faculty
Directorates in May 2005.
