10/24 Minutes

Minutes of the Special Meeting of Council held on 27 November 2009 (COUN09-M8) were CONFIRMED.

10/25 Matters arising from the Minutes

25.1 Further to minute 09/110, Council NOTED that the Chair of Council had approved an extension to Sir John Gains’ appointment as Pro-Chancellor until 31 July 2013.

25.2 Further to minute 09/114.1, Council NOTED that the Chair of Council had approved the redundancy of a post of Research Fellow as recommended by the Redundancy Committee.

10/26 University Medal

COUN10-P32

Council APPROVED the issue of invitations to receive University Medals at Graduation Ceremonies.

10/27 Honorary Degrees: Invitations

COUN10-P33

Pursuant to Statute XVIII, on the recommendation of Senate and with the advice of the Honorary Degrees Committee, Council APPROVED the issuing of invitations to persons to receive Honorary Degrees at Graduation Ceremonies.

10/28 Human Resources Committee

Council RECEIVED a report of the meeting of the Human Resources Committee held on 9 February 2010 and:

28.1 APPROVED the Managing Sickness Absence: Policy and Procedures

28.2 APPROVED the award of title of Emeritus Professor as follows:

Dr Mike Gane formerly Professor of Sociology, Social Sciences#

Dr Rainer Goldsmith formerly Professor of Human Biology, Human Sciences#

Dr Mark Tippett, formerly Professor of Banking and Finance, Business School

Dr John Wilson, formerly Professor of Operational Research, Business School

# cases were approved by the Chair of Human Resources Committee after the meeting on 9 February.

The following matters from the report of the meeting on 9 February 2010 were highlighted:

(i) The Committee had received a presentation on pensions, from an independent actuary and consultant, that had been open to staff across the University.

(ii) The HR Quarterly Management Report was evolving, and proving useful in highlighting trends within the University.

(iii) Good progress had been made against the HR Implementation Plan for 2009-10 and thanks were offered to the Director of HR and his team.

10/29 Chair’s Action

Council NOTED that the Vice-Chancellor (with delegated authority) had taken action between meetings to approve the appointment of Professor Paul Chung as Associate Dean (Research) in the Faculty of Science from 1 February 2010 to 31 July 2011.
