It was RESOLVED to CONFIRM the Minutes of the 311th Meeting of the Council held on 29 October 2004 [COUN04-M8].

04/156      Systems Engineering at Loughborough

COUN04-P120

Council considered proposals from the Faculty of Engineering and, on the recommendation of Senate, APPROVED the closure of the Department of Systems Engineering and its assimilation with the Department of Electronic and Electrical Engineering from 31 December 2004.  The consequent dissolution of the School of Aeronautical, Automotive and Systems Engineering, which had existed in name only, was also APPROVED.

04/157      Honorary Degrees

COUN04-P121

Pursuant to Statute XVIII, on the recommendation of Senate and with the advice of the Honorary Degrees Committee, Council APPROVED the issuing of invitations to persons to receive Honorary Degrees at Graduation Ceremonies in 2005.

Members were reminded that the names of individuals nominated should remain confidential until they had been contacted in the New Year.

The Vice-Chancellor informed Council that there would be a second round of nominations for individuals to receive Honorary Degrees in the New Year.

04/158       Appointment of next Dean of Social Sciences and Humanities

On the recommendation of Senate, Council APPROVED the appointment of the Joint Committee to recommend the next Dean of Social Sciences and Humanities as follows:

Chair:     Vice-Chancellor (ex-officio)

Three members of the SSH Faculty Board (nominated by the Faculty Board): Professor D J Allen, Dr R Kinna & Dr J Demaine

One lay member of Council (nominated by Council): Mrs J A M Strong

04/159       Deputy Vice-Chancellor Appointment

(i)        Council noted that, on the recommendation of Senate, the Chair had taken action to approve that the membership of the Appointment Committee for the Deputy Vice-Chancellor be the same as the Arrangements Committee for the post of Vice-Chancellor.

(ii)   Council APPROVED a recommendation from the Appointment Committee for the Deputy Vice-Chancellor that Professor P H Roberts’ appointment as Deputy Vice-Chancellor be extended to 31 July 2006.  This would allow for continuity at the senior management level following the appointment of the new Vice-Chancellor.

Council APPROVED an Appointments Committee to conduct the short-listing and final interviews for the next Vice-Chancellor as follows:

Chair:     Sir Bryan Carsberg

Four lay members of Council: Sir John Jennings, Peter Haslehurst, Jackie Strong and Venu Dhupa (subject to her acceptance)

Five members of academic staff: Professor Russ Bowman, Professor Peter Golding, Professor Phil Roberts, Professor Morag Bell and Professor Peter Smith (subject to his acceptance).

ii)       Promotion to Senior Lecturer by Research Route (Engineering Faculty)

iii)     Procedure for the Award of Personal Titles

iv)     Criteria for Recruitment of, or Redesignation to, Research Fellows

v)      Policy on Child Protection

vi)     Academic Probation.

Council RATIFIED the action of the Chair of Council, on the recommendation of the Chair of Senate, with the advice of the Chair of Human Resources Committee, in approving the award of the following personal titles:
