Student Outreach and Recruitment

Current Students

Student Helper

The Student Outreach and Recruitment team uses a scheme called Students Helping Students to recruit Student Helpers to our events. The information below will explain what the scheme is and how you can get involved.

The Students Helping Students (SHS) Scheme Explained

SHS is effectively a scheme for current Loughborough Students who have a real interest in working with and inspiring young people, who we contact when we need students to help with an event.

All SHS work is paid as we appreciate the financial pressures of being a student, and the value of helpers who approach their work in a motivated and professional manner. It is important to note that SHS work is undertaken on a casual basis, and we are not able to guarantee any student regular hours.

See below for details on how students are selected for events.

How SHS's are selected for events

When organising an event the SOAR team email the SHS mailing list, which includes the link to the SHS database. Students can then log in using their username and password and register their interest for a specific events. The team make their final selection of students from these recipients based on criteria relevant to that particular event. These could include: speed of reply, gender, course studied, quantity of work undertaken previously, punctuality and reliability.

Students are then notified via email if they have been selected or have been added to the reserve list

We make every effort to ensure that as far as event requirements allow, work is allocated evenly between available volunteers.

What activities entail

Something which quickly becomes apparent when working for Student Outreach and Recruitment is that no two activities are ever the same! Different participants, venues, activities and staff mean that every day will be different. During the last year Student Helpers have:

...and lots of other things too!

The School of Science produce a regular newsletter for schools' & colleges' download your copy here.

Criminal Records Bureau Checks (CRB)

Once you are an active member of the Students Helping Students scheme we will ask you to undertake a CRB check, for your protection and that of visiting students. This is funded and orgnaised by the university, and we will contact you to arrange it.

The Ideal Student Helper

There is no one type of student who makes the ideal Student Helper - we have people from all backgrounds and all courses who contribute to events! There are however, some essential characteristics which all of our Student Helpers share -reliability, a sense of humour, the ability to listen and take the initiative when things don't go to plan and an interest in working with young people.

This is what some of our students have to say about being part of SHS.

“SHS has provided me with a different point of view on life and is a great experience which has significantly increased my confidence. It has introduced me to people from different cultural backgrounds and given me a chance to improve my public speaking and communication skills. The scheme has made me realise how much all of us can positively influence lives of young adults, and that sometimes a short conversation can go a long way!”

“As a Student Helper I feel I have been able to pick up valuable life skills that I wouldn’t have learnt from solely completing my degree. I have learnt to speak in front of large groups of people and interacted with many different people. I definitely feel the skills I have picked up will help me in life going forward.”
