Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Sustainability and the BEST Awards

Deadline for Nominations: 23rd March 2012.
Staff, Students, Suppliers and Members of the Community must be nominated for all awards with the exception of the research project poster competition and the award for the BEST Hall.

Summary

The Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Sustainability and the BEST (Building Environmental Sustainability Together) awards recognise exceptional service and contribution to campus sustainability, environmental awareness and environmental leadership. The awards are made annually to individuals or teams of registered students or staff at Loughborough University or Loughborough Students’ Union and to a University contractor or supplier. In exceptional circumstances the Vice-Chancellor’s Award may be awarded to an individual outside the University who has made a significant contribution to sustainability at the University.

A prize of £500 will be awarded to the winner of the Vice-Chancellor’s Award. A prize of £300 will be awarded to the winner of the BEST Research & Enterprise Award (based on a poster competition). All other award winners will receive certificates.

The awards will be made at an evening awards ceremony on 30th April 2012 hosted by Loughborough Students’ Union.

Awards Requiring Nominations

There are six categories under which nominations can be made:

  • The Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Sustainability [£500 prize]
  • BEST  Student Contribution (individual or team)
  • BEST  Staff Contribution (individual or team)
  • BEST  New Initiative (individual or team)
  • BEST  Supplier / Contractor
  • BEST  Inspirational lecturer on sustainability

All submissions must be nominated and seconded.

Nominees for the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Sustainability should be for individuals or teams who have shown exceptional and/or continuous efforts in one or more areas of sustainability which have had a significant impact on University life. The prize for this award is £500. Where this award is made to a member of University staff the payment will be to a departmental project code for use by that member of staff in their work.

Nominations for all the awards are expected to reflect on the innovative thinking and commitment of the nominees (individuals or teams) and the impact of their contribution. The Awards will only be made in respect of achievements during the twelve months preceding the closing date for nominations with the exception of the Vice Chancellor’s Award for Sustainability which may recognise long term achievements.

The BEST Student Research and Enterprise Award: Poster Competition

This award is a poster competition. The award is open to students registered for post-graduate study at the University. Posters should explain the research to a non-specialist audience focusing on the potential impact of the research in regard to environmental sustainability.  

The prize for this award is £300 and is supported by the University’s Enterprise Office.

The production of the posters at the Print Unit will be funded by the University. Design advice will be available to entrants and details on submission procedures will be provided. All posters must be A1 in size. Entry forms must be submitted by 23rd March 2012. Posters will need to be submitted by noon on 13th April 2012 and will be displayed in Loughborough Students’ Union between 25th April and 2nd May 2012.

The BEST Improved Hall of Residence

This award will be based on the results of the hall leagues for energy-saving and bottle recycling.
