Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering

Andrew Simpson Project Prize

A prize to be awarded annually to the to the value of £200 for the Part C undergraduate student in the School whose project contributes most to the improvement of sports through engineering in the view of the Wolfson School’s prize awarding board.

Andrew Simpson was a Product Design and Manufacture student who graduated in 2007. This prize was established in his memory by the Andrew Simpson Sport Enabling Trust.

JCB Computational Fluid Dynamics Prize

A prize to be awarded annually to the Wolfson School undergraduate student undertaking module MMD802 whose Computational Fluid Dynamics project is judged by the prize’s assessor panel to be of the highest standard in respect of: recognition of the engineering need of the supporting company; approach to problem solving; and quality of communication of the findings of the work for maximum industrial impact. The value of the prize will be confirmed annually by JCB.

Part C Product Design and Manufacture Merit Prize

A prize of £75 is awarded annually to the best Part C student in Product Design and Manufacture in the view of the programme board.

Tarmac Prize

A prize, to the value of £100, to be awarded annually to the part C student on the BEng or MEng Manufacturing and Engineering Management programme with the best academic performance as judged by the examination board.

First Year Prizes

Shell Prize

A prize to the value of £100 is awarded to the best first year student on the Mechanical Engineering degree programme.

School First-Year Merit Prize

A prize to the value of £100, to be awarded to the first-year student with the best overall academic performance on a manufacturing engineering degree programme in the view of the programme board.


Second Year Prizes

J N Butters Memorial Prizes

Prizes to the value of £100 are awarded to the best Part B student on the Bachelors Mechanical Engineering programme and the best Part B student on the Masters Mechanical Engineering degree programme in the view of the programme board.

School Second-Year Merit Prizes

Prizes to the value of £100 are awarded to the best Part B student on a Bachelors Manufacturing Engineering programme and the best Part B student on a Masters Manufacturing Engineering degree programme in the view of the programme board.

Shell Design Prize

A prize to the value of £200 is awarded to the best second year industry-based design project group on a mechanical engineering degree programme.


Final Year Prizes

adidas Sports Technology Project Prize

A prize to the value of £500, to be awarded to the student who is judged to have submitted the best Final Year project on the BSc Sports Technology programme.

adidas Sports Technology Merit Prize

A prize to the value of £500 to be awarded to the best Part C student on the Sports Technology programme in the view of the programme board.

Basil F W Powell Memorial Prize

A prize to the value of £75 is awarded to the final year student on a mechanical engineering programme with the best performance in professional training.

Ford Prize

An occasional prize awarded for outstanding group design projects associated with the Ford Motor Company.

Frederic Barnes Waldron Prize

A prize consisting of a certificate and a medal to be awarded to the best final-year student on an IMechE accredited degree in the view of the relevant programme board.

To be eligible for consideration, students will also need to be IMechE Affiliate members. The prize will be awarded to a student from the Department of Aeronautical and Automotive Engineering in even years and to a student from the Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering in odd years

IET Manufacturing Engineering Student Prize

A prize of a certificate and two years’ free membership of the Institution of Engineering and Technology is awarded to the most outstanding student on Part D of an IET accredited manufacturing engineering programme in the view of the programme board.

IMechE Project Prize

A prize of a medal and a certificate is awarded to the Part C student on an IMechE accredited mechanical engineering degree programme who completes the best individual project in the view of the programme board.

JCB Excavators Ltd. Design Prize

A prize to the value of £100 each is awarded to the students in the best final year design project group in the Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering. The Award recognises the project which embodies the highest excellence in applied engineering design.

Loughborough University Development Trust Prize

A prize to the value of £100, to be awarded annually to an exceptional graduating student who the school judges to have demonstrated excellent academic achievement under demanding circumstances, or with excellence in extra-curricular achievement.

This prize is funded through the The Development Trust. The Trust exists to support the University in giving students an outstanding quality of educational experience. It raises funds from former students and other friends of the University. Their generosity has made this prize possible.

Manufacturing Engineering DIS Merit Prize

A prize to the value of £75 is awarded to the final year student on a manufacturing engineering programme with the best performance in professional training in the view of the programme board.

Martin Jones Prize

A prize to the value of £100 to be awarded to the graduating student with the highest overall mark on the BEng Mechanical Engineering programme.

Martin Jones was a student of Mechanical Engineering, graduating in 2003. He died in October 2003. This prize was established by members of his family in recognition of Martin and his love of the time he spent at Loughborough.

Morris Prize for Innovation

A prize to the value of £100 is awarded to the Part C student on the Product Design and Manufacture programme who completes the best individual project.

Part C School Merit Prize (a final year prize)

A prize of £100 is awarded to the Part C student on the Innovative Manufacturing Engineering programme who completes the best individual project in the view of the programme board.

Part D School Merit Prize (a final year prize)

A prize to the value of £75 to be awarded to the best Part D student on the Innovative Manufacturing Engineering programme in the view of the programme board.

Professor Roy Sury Memorial Prize

A prize of £100 is awarded to the Part C student on the Manufacturing Engineering and Management programme or on the Innovative Manufacturing Engineering programme who is judged by the Programme Board to have completed the most balanced individual project.

This prize has been established in memory of Professor Roy Sury who was Head of Department of Manufacturing Engineering 1972-1986 and who sadly died in January 1999.

School Merit/IMechE Best Student Award

A prize to the value of £75 and/or a certificate is awarded to the Part D student on the Mechanical Engineering programme with the highest overall mark.

 

W H Purnell Memorial Prize

A prize to the value of £75 is awarded to the MEng Part C student on a mechanical engineering programme with the best academic performance as judged by the examination board

Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering Final Year Project Prize (supported by Intelligent Energy)

A prize to the value of £1000 awarded to the student who is judged to have submitted the best Final Year project in either the BEng Mechanical Engineering, MSc Mechanical Engineering or Product Design Engineering programmes.


Postgraduate Prizes

Professor Peter Nevitt Prize

A prize to the value of £200 to be awarded to the graduating student from any of the school's MSc programmes who completes the best individual project in the opinion of a committee comprising the Head of School, the Programme Director and the Project Coordinator.

School Merit Prize

A prize to the value of £75 is awarded to the best MSc student graduating from any programme in the Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering.
