Loughborough College of Education Commemorative Award

Report from Joanna Newman

Performing music has been an important part of my life for as long as I can remember and I have achieved my Advanced Certificate in Flute, Grade 8 Piano, and Grade 7 Singing. I was a member of Loughborough University Orchestra, West Sussex County Youth Orchestra, Chichester Youth Orchestra, and the West Sussex County Wind Band for a number of years playing flute and piccolo. I have also played piano continuo for the Chichester Youth String Orchestra and accompanied younger players too. I have continued to play the flute and piano whilst completing my degree in Industrial Design and Technology in which I achieved a 2:1. I was also able to integrate my music into my degree course by designing and manufacturing a polymer violin suitable for young school children starting to learn the instrument.

The money I have been awarded has been used to fund flute lessons and music, as I hope to take the Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music Diploma at Easter 2001. Holders of the Licentiate of the Royal Schools of Music award are considered likely to have reached standards of achievement at least comparable with a graduate award typically taken after four years of Higher Education study in Music.
