Continental European Railways & Urban Public Transport
The £500 prize was used to fund a study of Continental European Railways & Urban Public Transport. Seven cities in six countries were visited: Luxembourg, Zurich, Milan, Venice, Vienna, Budapest and Prague.
A total of 19 train journeys were taken and each was rated with a set of quality indicators commonly used in the transport industry. At each city, all modes of public transport were compared using a similar set of criteria.
The study was extremely interesting and inspiring as every city is unique and different transport solutions are necessary. Moreover, the serious flooding in central Europe left cities with the enormous challenge of re-establishing transport services and keeping its citizens on the move. I was thus able to see how authorities managed transport in a crisis situation.
