Access to Learning Fund (ALF) - for UK Students

ALF Grants

Access to Learning Fund grants are available to UK full-time and part-time under-graduate and post-graduate (taught and research) students studying at least 50% of a full-time course who have higher than average costs or experience unanticipated financial difficulties. To qualify, a student must meet the same residence conditions as for student loans. If an undergraduate student is eligible for a student loan, the full entitlement must already have been applied for before approaching ALF.

ALF payments are normally grants (ie repayment is not required). The amounts paid will depend on the case presented within the context of overall demand and the total allocation made to the University. In general, priority will be given to needs arising in the following circumstances:

There is a maximum payment of £3,500 per student in any one year but, typically, individual payments to successful applicants fall within the range £350 - £1,350. Any application to the Fund must be accompanied by supporting documentation, including the latest 3 months’ bank statements.

ALF Application Procedure

Further information on eligibility criteria and application procedures for the ALF Fund and Bursaries is available from the Student Support Centre (tel 01509 222058).

The necessary forms can be obtained from the Student Support Centre website.
