Government Support

Full-time UK students

There are two main forms of Government support which prospective UK undergraduates may apply for:

Maintenance grants are non-repayable sums of money paid by the Government to eligible students. Their value will depend on your household income and which country you are permanently resident in.

Student loans are low interest maintenance and tuition fee loans with repayment deferred until after you leave your course and start earning more than £15,000 a year. Eligible students are entitled to a base level maintenance loan which is managed by the Student Loans Company. If you choose to defer payment of your tuition fees, this amount is also added to your student loan

Full-time EU students

New non-UK EU students may be eligible for a low interest tuition fee loan with repayment deferred until after you leave your course and start earning more than a specified amount a year.

£25,000 £1,584

This table is a guide to how much Maintenance Grant or Special Support Grant a student permanently resident in England might receive in 2007/2008.

The Maintenance Grant (or for some a Special Support Grant) is available to eligible full-time undergraduate students permanently resident in England. Eligible students will be entitled to a non-repayable grant of up to £2,765 a year. The award is means-tested and the maximum grant is paid to students whose annual household income is £17,910 or below. Thereafter the value of the grant is tapered until the income reaches £38,330. Eligible students who receive income-related benefits will receive a Special Support Grant rather than a Maintenance Grant.

Additional information about Government support, including eligibility criteria and how to apply, can be found on the Directgov website

Student Loans (Maintenance & Tuition Fee Loans)

Eligible full-time undergraduate students permanently resident in England will be able to apply for a Student Loan for Fees to cover the cost of tuition fees and for a Student Loan for Maintenance to help with living costs. The loans are administered by the Student Loans Company (SLC).

The Student Loan for Fees is available to eligible students to cover the cost of tuition fees. The money which you borrow (up to £3,070 a year in 2007/08) is paid directly to the University on your behalf.

The Student Loan for Maintenance is available to eligible students to help with living costs. The amount available will depend on your household income and where you live whilst you study. Of this loan entitlement, 75% is non-income assessed while 25% is income assessed. This means that a proportion of the loan paid to you will be dependent upon your household income. Eligible students can expect to be able to borrow at least £3,280 in 2007/08 but the precise amount will depend upon your household income and also eligibility for a Maintenance Grant.

Repayment of both loans will begin after you have finished studying and are earning over the repayment threshold of £15,000 per year, and a single debt will be created by merging the two.

For more details including eligibility criteria, how to apply and a calculator to determine how much you are eligible to borrow, see the Directgov website
