Support Example

Introduction

Three students leaning out of a window in a student hall of residence smiling into camera

With so many different forms of support available, it can be difficult to see how they fit together for you. In order to help, we have put together an example case of a fictional undergraduate student applying to start their studies at Loughborough University in October 2007.

Every effort has been taken to make sure that this example is as accurate as possible. It is provided as an illustration only, and should not be relied upon. Please refer to the Directgov website for further details of support which may be available to you.

Sophie is permanently resident in England and wants to study Chemistry with Forensic Analysis (MChem) in the Department of Chemistry.

  • Age: 18
  • Household income: £16,250
  • Qualifications: AAB (A Level)

Sophie plans to live in a fully-catered hall of residence during her first year and wants to defer the payment of her fees until after her graduation.

Costs

Sophie is liable for the standard tuition fees, and will also have to pay roughly £100 for safety equipment and a lab coat for her laboratory work.

Support

Sophie qualifies for the full Loughborough University Undergraduate Bursary. Assuming Sophie achieves her predicted grades and has made Loughborough her first (firm) choice university, she should also qualify for a Merit-based Year of Entry Scholarship.

The Directgov Student Loan and Grant calculator shows that Sophie is eligible for the full Maintenance Grant and also the student loans shown on the right

Conclusion

As the table shows, during her first year at Loughborough Sophie will have enough support available to cover the costs listed.
