Armorial Bearings & Academic Dress
Armorial Bearings
(The colours of wreath and mantling are given as Argent and Sable.)
The arms are based on those granted in 1920 to the former technical college, from which the University derived. The former arms centred on a cross engrailed Gules, but as the colour purple is regarded as the University colour, it was felt appropriate to bring the tincture Purpure into the arms. The small cross appeared originally on the coinage of the Mercian kingdom within whose bounds Loughborough was situated and appeared also on the original arms. The lamp (of learning) and thunderbolt are new; the thunderbolt indicates the University's association with technology. The peacock on the shield of the college arms was taken from the arms of the Dukes of Rutland and has now been promoted to the crest as a symbol of pride in achievement; he now holds the key of knowledge. The motto "Veritate, Scientia, Labore" was also used by the former Loughborough College.
"Sable on a cross engrailed Purpure fimbriated Argent between in the
first quarter a cross composed of the upper and lower limbs of a cross crosslet
and the horizontal limbs of a cross formy and in the fourth quarter
a thunderbolt an ancient lamp inflamed all Or and for the crest on a wreath
of the colours a peacock proper supporting with the dexter claw a key Purpure
the wards upward and irradiated Or"
